The role of leptin in diencephalic syndrome.
Diencephalic syndrome is a rare condition associated with central nervous system tumors. The most common presentation is secondary failure to thrive with proper caloric intake and no statural impairment. Despite the importance of this syndrome, little is known of its pathophysiology. Some reports have documented changes in human growth hormone and insulin levels at the onset, whereas others hav...
متن کاملThe paramedian diencephalic syndrome: a dynamic phenomenon.
The paramedian diencephalic syndrome is characterized by a clinical triad: hypersomnolent apathy, amnesic syndrome, and impaired vertical gaze. We studied 4 cases with computed tomography evidence of bilateral diencephalic infarctions. Each case began abruptly with hypersomnolent apathy followed by fluctuations from appropriate affect, full orientation, and alertness to labile mood, confabulati...
متن کاملIncreased urinary catecholamines in an infant with the diencephalic syndrome.
In an infant of 15 months with the diencephalic syndrome, urinary excretion of norepinephrine was moderately raised and epinephrine greatly so. It is suggested that catecholamine secretion may be due to sympathetic stimulation at the level of the diencephalon, by a space-occupying lesion pressing on the thalamohypothalamic pathway. Some of the symptoms of the diencephalic syndrome such as eupho...
متن کاملDiencephalic syndrome: clinical features and imaging findings.
PURPOSE To emphasize the importance of imaging in children with diencephalic syndrome due to hypothalamic/chiasmatic astrocytomas. METHODS Findings in nine patients (mean age, 26 months) with diencephalic syndrome and hypothalamic/chiasmatic astrocytomas were analyzed retrospectively, including reviewing clinical records, imaging examinations, and follow-up studies. RESULTS Symptoms and sig...
متن کاملRussell's diencephalic syndrome of early childhood.
A case of Russell's diencephalic syndrome of early childhood is presented and the world literature reviewed. Assays of serum growth hormone (HGH) and fat mobilizing substance (FMS) were performed and gave very abnormal results. The role of these two substances is discussed and their value in the diagnosis of this syndrome is emphasized.
